Off the Courts: Making a Difference, John Amaechi and Sue Wicks in conversation with Clay Cane
Join former NBA and WNBA basketball players John Amaechi and Sue Wicks as they discuss their transitions from professional athlete to community advocate and how they leveraged their celebrity in support of lgbt causes.
John Amaechi
John Amaechi is a psychologist, New York Times best-selling Author, retired NBA basketball star and social entrepreneur working in both the US and the Europe. His work is mostly in industrial/organisational settings with medium to large institutions: business, educational and philanthropic, to help them maximise their human capital. John is an accomplished motivational speaker with experience addressing a diverse cross-section of clients, including an impressive list of fortune 500 corporations, international charities and world-class educational institutions, throughout Great Britain, Europe and the United States. He has also appeared on such shows as Richard & Judy, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Real Time with Bill Maher, Oprah and many more speaking on issues of diversity and inclusion. John has extensive expertise in keynote and motivational speaking, conference chairmanship and workshop administration. He is able to set and maintain tone, as well as use wit, warmth and insight to link the individual facets of any programme. His demeanour and experience allow for an inspiring, entertaining and unforgettable interaction.
He also relishes the challenge of enhancing executive performance on a one-to-one basis. Consulting as an executive advisor, working alongside leaders to analyse strategy, facilitate intra-organisational communication and highlight and tackle problems that diminish workplace harmony and performance.

She was named a Kodak All-American in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and in 1988 she won the Naismith, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Women’s Basketball News Service and Street & Smith’s National Player of the Year awards. She was Player of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1986, 1987 and 1988, winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP award in 1986 and 1988, and sharing it in 1987. The scoring and rebounding totals are records for a male or female player at Rutgers.
She was a Gold Medalist in the 1987 Pan American Games.
Following her college career, she played professionally in Italy, Japan, Spain, Hungary, France and Israel before the WNBA was founded. In 1997, she was the 1st pick of the inaugural WNBA Draft for the New York Liberty.
Wicks spent more than 15 years playing professionally overseas. She was captain of the Liberty as well as All-star player. In 2000, she received the WNBA’s top award for sportsmanship. In 1997, 1999 and in 2000, the Liberty reached the WNBA Finals. In 2002, Wicks and the Liberty returned to the Finals again.
Sue was inducted into the Rutgers University’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2005. Since her retirement she has worked in Television, College Coaching and as an International Sports Envoy for the US State Department. In 2009, Wicks was honored by Stonewall for her work in the LGBT community.
